UBBO ENNINGA

Of the two identical male figures, one kneels with outstretched arms on the broken, even level; the other hangs upside-down in one of the round holes.

The theme „Above/Below“ is not only visible in the orientation and line of sight of both nudes; it is also found in the position of the hand and emphasised by the colours. In the sense of opposites, dark is above and brightness delves into the depths.

A balance of opposites becomes clear. The age-old human drama of hanging between above and below, spirit and body, heaven and earth, light and shadow. To be human means: experience opposites, bring the darkness into light and light into the darkness, acknowledge this unity.

Whereas the first version of „Above/Below“ from 1998 had a static position, this second version is hung on a thin steelwire. Due to the horizontal tara on the level, the figure turns on its axis.
